Lead Builder

We’re looking for a “Builder in Residence” here at Kotare Village.  Over the coming years we’ll be building 30+ houses for our village and are looking for a builder to lead the project.  We’re after someone keen to work closely with the design team from concept through to completion.

We’re currently looking at a modular design, using non-toxic materials (ie, Douglas Fir) to achieve passive solar heating.  We’re keen for the design to make sense not only architecturally, but also from the perspective of a logical and efficient construction.

Qualifications & Experience

A real bonus would be someone with old school craftsmanship.  Someone with all the tips and tricks that make everything work smoothly on site.  The main business in the village is the Koanga Institute, which has saved New Zealand’s largest collection of heritage seeds from the brink of extinction.  Along those lines we’d like to preserve all of the great carpentry wisdom which seems to be going extinct in the industry today and we have a group of inspired owner/builders looking to absorb all the skills they can from a master of the craft.

Additionally, we are looking for someone who might be a bit less skilled but has some building experience, is keen as and wants to come check out village life for a few months and help and help with the building projects.

Salary to be negotiated with the successful applicants.  Note that we grow and prepare some of the best meat and produce you will ever taste–the milk-fed bacon alone is worth checking us out!
