Purpose Statement

Kotare Community Land Trust  –  Purpose Statement

Kotare Community Land Trust will have 3 Purposes.

  1. The primary purposes of the trust are as follows:

(a) To use the land it holds, to model economic and ecological systems that are regenerative* of the environment and the community.

(b) To use the knowledge and experience gained in modeling regenerative systems on their land, to educate and support others in NZ to use similar systems.

(c) To provide land for the Koanga Institute Inc. to develop a campus and educational facilities that will engage students, interns and apprentices in learning about regenerative systems, and support community outreach.

(d) To provide opportunities for all people to, secure appropriately designed housing that is affordable and that is controlled by the residents on an ongoing basis;

(e) To preserve the quality and affordability of housing for future residents of the community;

(f) To protect the natural environment and to promote the ecologically sound use of land and natural resources and the long-term health and safety of the community;

(g) Do any act or thing incidental or conducive to the attainment of any of the above objects.

  1.  Without detracting from the primary objects, the secondary objects of the Trust are to:

(a) Establish codes of behavior applicable to members

(b) Grant leases of licenses over any property it may acquire and to set the terms of such leases and licenses

(c) Maintain; a purpose statement, a mission statement, and a regularly updated plan of achievable goals that clearly expresses how the trust will achieve its stated purposes in number 1 above.

  1. Notwithstanding the above objects the Society shall be limited in furthering or attaining its objects to the advancement of charitable purposes in New Zealand.


* – The term “regenerative” describes processes that restore, renew or revitalize their own sources of energy and materials, creating sustainable systems that integrate the needs of society with the integrity of nature.
